Summary

Objectives
The seminar aimed to strengthen cooperation among 13 NGOs from 10 countries by bringing together 18 youth workers involved in volunteer management, training and non-formal education. Its goals were to improve networking at European level, promote meaningful exchange on peace-related challenges in local communities and reinforce the support that youth workers provide to young volunteers so they can become active peace builders. More specific objectives included understanding peace culture and peace education, developing conflict-management and non-violent communication skills, identifying competences relevant for peace building and improving the quality, inclusiveness and impact-orientation of volunteer opportunities.

Implementation
The seminar took place in Vilanova i la Geltrú (Spain) from 1–7 April 2019. Eighteen youth workers from Greece, Turkey, Italy, Portugal, Latvia, Estonia, North Macedonia, Spain and Bulgaria participated. Through sessions on peace education, conflict transformation, non-violent communication and volunteer support, participants exchanged practices from their organisations and explored how to improve volunteer management structures. Working groups focused on competence development, impact assessment, leadership opportunities for volunteers and tools to foster participation. Activities combined theory, group dialogue, workshops and peer learning to ensure an effective and practical learning process.

Results
The seminar enabled participants to identify and develop key competences necessary for living and building peace, including conflict management, non-violent communication, giving and receiving feedback, active listening and critical thinking. A shared competence list for volunteer peace-building activities was created, including campaigning as a practical skill. Youth workers strengthened their ability to support volunteers, design inclusive and impact-oriented activities and integrate peace-education principles into their organisations. The partnership network was reinforced and participants returned to their countries with new tools, joint ideas and improved capacity to empower young volunteers to take leadership roles in community peace-building initiatives.
