Summary
Objectives
The project strengthened the democratic participation of young migrants by building social-media literacy, critical thinking, and awareness of democratic processes. Trainings increased knowledge on democracy, fundamental rights, active citizenship, and the role of social media in public participation. The project created a learning space where young migrants and local youth discussed policies affecting them and reflected on representation, participation, and social cohesion. Activities promoted inclusive participation through creative and interactive methods such as drawing exercises, interviews, simulations, and content production.
Implementation
Two youth-mobility training activities and two participation events were organised.
- The first training took place in Ankara (21–27 May 2023) with 28 participants from Syria, Afghanistan, Guinea, Mozambique, Iraq, Azerbaijan, and Türkiye.
- The second training was held in İstanbul (10–14 October 2023) with 26 young migrants and local youth.
Both programmes covered democratic participation, social-media literacy, representation, media analysis, and interview techniques.
Two youth-participation events followed:
- The “Social Participation of Migrants Symposium” in Ankara (25 November 2023) with 40 participants.
- A second event hosted by Mozaik in Samsun (25 December 2023) with 60 participants.
Across all events, 54 young people benefited from direct training and 97 from participation activities. The events allowed young migrants and local youth to exchange experiences, work in mixed groups, and jointly develop ideas on participation and social cohesion.
Results
The project increased interaction between young migrants and local young people, strengthened understanding of democratic participation, and improved awareness of social-media influence in shaping public opinion. Participants analysed media narratives, discussed misinformation, and explored representation through hands-on tasks such as creating media accounts, producing interviews, and running a parliament simulation on a fictional social-media law.
Group discussions supported open debate on democracy, voting, identity, inclusion, and coexistence. Participants developed digital content, shared reflections on migration and social participation, and created word clouds and group artworks to visualise their perspectives. The project fostered a strong sense of community; participants formed new friendships, exchanged experiences beyond sessions, and highlighted diversity as a unifying element.
By reaching over 150 young people directly and indirectly, the project strengthened democratic awareness, improved media-literacy skills, and contributed to a more inclusive and participatory social environment.
