Objectives
The study visit addressed issues youth and social workers in Austria face when working with migrant young people. It focused on cultural diversity, identity, Turkish politics, and recent challenges such as radicalisation. The aim was to increase awareness, strengthen understanding of Turkey’s social and cultural context, and promote open, respectful interaction in everyday work.
Implementation
After a preparation phase in Austria, participants spent five days in Samsun. They visited youth centres, research institutes, cultural and religious institutions, and met with politicians, minority representatives, and local youth workers. The programme offered structured exchanges and direct observation of local youth-work practices.
Results
Participants gained clearer insight into Turkey’s political, cultural, and social structures. Their ability to handle sensitive topics with migrant youth improved. The visit enhanced openness, reduced uncertainty in professional practice, and supported more competent and appreciative engagement with diverse young people.
